The most commonly used fabric for a formal dress is silk, as it is both classy and elegant. Another choice of fabric for a formal dress is chiffon. It is very light fabric and usually used for making long dresses and gowns.

Chiffon is a light fabric so it needs to be stitched with a lining of a thicker fabric as opposed to the silk gowns that need no such additions. For winter season, the most obvious choice of fabric for a 2012 formal dress is velvet or brocade. Velvet is thick and has a very smooth folded texture which makes it perfect for long gowns. Brocade is also an option for winter dresses as floral patterns on it which makes it perfect for sequin work.
